Wānaka Search and Rescue answers the call

For those who venture into the stunning but often unforgiving terrain of Mount Aspiring National Park, Wānaka Search and Rescue (WSR) is a lifeline. Entirely volunteer-run, WSR provides expert search and rescue services, responding to emergencies across the Wānaka, Hāwea, Fiordland, and Aoraki/Mount Cook regions. Whether it’s climbers, trampers, skiers, kayakers, or even those at risk closer to home, such as dementia sufferers prone to wandering, WSR is always ready to respond.

Each year, the dedicated team answers around 50 callouts, with demand peaking between November and March. In 2023 alone, WSR completed 32 operations—their busiest year since 2017. These rescues wouldn’t be possible without the 80 trained volunteers who collectively contribute around 3,500 hours annually. Their expertise spans five specialist areas: Alpine Cliff Rescue, Sub Alpine and Bush Rescue, River Rescue, Incident Management (including search dogs and Coastguard), and the Lake Hāwea Marine Group.

Given that helicopters are involved in approximately 90% of operations, safety and familiarity with aerial manoeuvres are essential. Volunteers undergo rigorous training to ensure they can enter and exit helicopters in different scenarios, preparing them for real-life rescues. Helicopter time is provided at discounted rates by a trusted operator, reinforcing the critical skills needed for both training and actual missions.

Since 2004, CLT has proudly supported WSR by funding essential training and equipment upgrades. Maintaining up-to-date, fit-for-purpose gear is vital to ensuring the team remains highly skilled and ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

WSR’s impact extends far beyond those they directly rescue. Their work ensures that everyone—from seasoned adventurers to casual explorers—can safely enjoy the outdoors, knowing that expert help is available if needed. Thanks to broad community support, WSR continues to be a major asset to the Upper Clutha region, strengthening its longstanding partnerships with NZ Police, Wānaka Coastguard, LandSAR, and NZSAR.
